Parallel verses

Verses whose wording recurs elsewhere in the Bible, found by comparing the text of Bible editions word for word (the parallel map). The shares count verses: a verse counts once, however many places repeat it. References and numbers only, no Bible text.

Chart options

Combined from: King James Version 1769, Luther 1912, Hebrew (Westminster Leningrad Codex), Greek New Testament (SBLGNT), Known repetitions curated by hand. For each pair of verses the strongest match of these editions counts. The known repetitions curated by hand (the Ten Commandments and their quotations, the greatest commandment, parallel passages such as Kings and Chronicles, …) add only the pairs that no edition's text matched.

Type

On arrival identical and nearly identical pairs are chosen; tick similar to add the verses that share most of their words.

Wording

Stock phrases are wordings that recur in 10 or more places, mostly in the prophets and the laws, such as the formula that announces a word of God. A pair counts as a stock phrase when its two verses share only such a phrase, or such a phrase with a few common words around it; this holds however much of the verses the phrase fills, so a verse that consists of nothing but the phrase is a stock phrase too. Templates are frames that recur in 10 or more verses with a name, a number or a few other words changed, such as the closing formula of a king’s reign; a pair counts as a template when what its two verses share is such a frame. On arrival only distinctive wording is chosen; tick stock phrases or templates to add them.

Extent

How much of a verse the pair shares: a pair counts when it shares at least this share of one of its two verses. On arrival a pair counts when it shares at least half of one verse, so a short phrase in common is not enough; choose "All" to count every pair.

Repeated in

Off on arrival: a pair counts only when its two verses lie in different books. Tick it to count a verse that recurs in its own book, too.

Line colour

A row with nothing ticked counts as all ticked.

Verse sequence: Protestant canon, 66 books (KJV numbering). Counts and denominators depend on it.(definition)

Crosslinks in this selection: 2,165

A crosslink is a pair of verses that share wording and pass the chart options above; each pair counts once. Per book and per chapter a pair counts for both its verses, so the rows add up to more than the total.

How this is computed

The parallel map compares the text of each edition with itself and finds stretches of wording that recur: identical (the same words), nearly identical (a few words differ) and similar (most words shared). Stock phrases are short wordings that recur in 10 or more places; a pair whose verses share only such a phrase is marked as one and counts only when stock phrases are chosen (see “Wording” above). A composed text basis takes, for each pair of verses, the strongest match of its editions, so it finds more places, never fewer.

A pair has no direction: it counts for the books of both its verses. On arrival a pair counts only when its two verses lie in different books; tick “Count repetitions within the same book” under Chart options to count repeats inside one book as well. These are repeats of wording found by comparing texts, not cross-references chosen by editors, and not citations.
