Page views

Only page views are counted: per day, page area and audience (signed in or not) the server adds one to a number. No IP address, no cookie, no user agent, no account and nothing else that identifies a person is stored; a page view of a signed-in account is counted as a number only, without the account. So the figures are page views, not visitors.

By page area

Counted: pages opened directly or by following a link within the site, separately for visitors who are not signed in and for signed-in accounts (as a number only, without the account). Not counted: the staff and account areas, the sign-in pages, downloads and exports, browser prefetches and obvious bots. Signed-in page views are counted only since this split was added; earlier days show 0 for them. The page area is the first part of the address (for example /books); what follows it and any search query is never recorded.

With browser headers: page views whose request looked like a real browser; people, but also programs that drive a real browser. Without browser headers: the other page views, by programs that claim to be a browser (obvious bots are not counted at all). Both start when browser counting began.

With browser headers: page views whose request carried the headers every current browser sends when it opens a page. People send them, but so do programs that drive a real browser, so this number is an upper limit for people, not a count of people. Requests without these headers come almost always from programs. The headers are only looked at, never stored. Counted only since this number was added; earlier periods show no value.

The split into visitors who are not signed in and signed-in accounts is shown only to signed-in team members; this page shows everyone else the total of all page views, because with few accounts a public signed-in count could show one person's browsing per day.
